UTL 501 – International Business
The course covers international business theory, globalization, political risk, cultural risk, commercial risk, financial risk, international financial markets, country evaluation, exports, licensing and franchising, mergers and acquisitions, foreign direct investment structures, born-global firms, international business structures, international marketing, and economic integration.
UTL 502 – International Marketing
International marketing involves the management of the controllable and uncontrollable international environment, global market segmentation, understanding international consumers, assessing global market research feasibility, product development, pricing, selection of distribution channels, and promotion activities.
UTL 503 – International Economic Theory
This course aims to provide graduate students specializing in international trade and logistics with the fundamental concepts and analytical methods of international economics. Topics include the main theories of international trade, the reasons for trade among countries, the effects of trade on economic welfare, and global trade policies.
Content includes: Classical and New Trade Theories (Absolute Advantage, Comparative Advantage, Heckscher-Ohlin Model, New Trade Theories), Customs Tariffs and Trade Policy Instruments, Foreign Exchange Markets and International Finance, Balance of Payments, Foreign Direct Investment, and Globalization. Students will gain a theoretical and analytical understanding of international economic relations and their implications for trade and logistics processes. Other topics include alternative trade models, equilibrium in closed and open economies, consumer behavior and production, and fixed and floating exchange rate systems.
RME 500 – Research Methods and Ethics
Covers research methods: defining a research problem, formulating a hypothesis, selecting appropriate methodologies, and testing hypotheses.
(ii) Research and publication ethics, addressing ethical issues in research practices and academic writing.
(iii) Academic writing rules in theses, articles, and papers, with correct use of citation and reference systems (APA 6, IEEE numbering system).
UTL 505 – International Logistics Management
The scope of this course includes planning, marketing, sales, transportation, management, accounting, communication, customs, insurance, distribution, and marketing functions of international logistics organizations.
UTL 590 – Seminar
For students in the thesis track, this is the final course taken before beginning the thesis (UTL 599). Each student is assigned a seminar advisor and is required to:
Write a 15–20 page original paper with clear arguments, a demonstrated understanding of the research method, comprehensive references, and proper formatting and citations.
Meet regularly with the advisor throughout the semester.
UTL 599 – Thesis
The thesis is a 100–120 page, research-based, critical and analytical study of selected articles, reports, books, or publications. The thesis topic must be approved by the student’s advisor and the department chair. Students are expected to submit drafts periodically for feedback, demonstrating critical text analysis, persuasive discussion, original thinking, and engagement with existing research and theory. All references must be properly cited, and the thesis must follow the required format.
Upon completion, the student must submit the thesis to a jury consisting of the advisor, at least one external member, and one internal member, and defend it in an oral examination. The jury may accept, reject, or require revisions before reaching a final decision.
UTL 506 – International Distribution Channels
Focuses on distribution channels as a controllable element of international marketing, covering the functioning of channels, introduction of wholesale and retail institutions, and management of physical distribution activities.
UTL 507 – International Finance
Designed to examine classical international finance theories and current research issues. Topics include the international monetary system, financial markets and instruments, exchange rate determination, currency and interest rate risks, and strategies for managing or avoiding these risks.
UTL 510 – Advanced Macroeconomics
Provides concepts, methods, and analytical tools to address macroeconomic problems and follow recent debates. Topics include: Consumption, Savings and Investment; Money Supply and Demand; Money, Credit and Interest; Aggregate Supply, Aggregate Demand, and Growth (AS-AD and IS-LM analysis); Expectations, Growth and Productivity; Inflation, Unemployment, and Fiscal Deficits; Inflation–Unemployment dynamics; Money Supply, Public Deficits and Inflation; and recent theoretical developments in macroeconomics.
UTL 511 – International Economic Policy
Covers the theoretical foundations, implementation methods, and economic effects of trade policies. Topics include: objectives and instruments of trade policies, protectionist approaches, tariffs and non-tariff barriers, trade liberalization, EU–Türkiye relations, balance of payments, foreign exchange markets, and Türkiye’s foreign trade structure. It also analyzes macroeconomic policies in open economies and their effects on internal and external balance.
UTL 512 – Financial Management
Focuses on the fundamentals of financial management. Topics include valuation, risk and return, cost of capital, financing decisions and capital structure, project valuation, and risk management.
UTL 515 – E-Commerce
Covers the new economy, the business environment in the digital age, globalization, digital business, e-commerce and e-transactions, commercial web applications, virtual transactions and access, and the importance of software and hardware for e-commerce.
UTL 516 – European Union and Türkiye: Economic Cooperation and Integration
Examines the economic integration process between the EU and Türkiye from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Topics include the general structure of the EU, historical development of Türkiye–EU relations, types of economic integration, customs union theory, the structure of the EU–Türkiye Customs Union, common trade policy, financial cooperation mechanisms, and new trade strategies.
UTL 517 – Field Study
Includes preparation of business plans and foreign trade strategies, SWOT analysis in firms, foreign market research, applications on payment and delivery methods, drafting of foreign trade contracts, financing foreign trade, export incentives, customs formalities, and international transportation practices.
UTL 519 – International Management
Covers introduction to international business, international marketing, international production, international management theory, organizational structures, internationalization, international business strategy, international human resource management, foreign investment decision-making, and international opportunity evaluation.
UTL 521 – Advanced Microeconomics
Topics include: scope of microeconomics, methods of microeconomic analysis, consumer theory and equilibrium, production theory and equilibrium, cost theory, markets and market forces, individual and market demand and supply curves, functions of demand and supply, market equilibrium, government interventions, partial equilibrium analysis, market types (perfect and imperfect competition), and current issues in the Turkish and world economy.
